Our journey began in 1916 with a modest tobacco shop in Kozhikode, and over the decades, our commitment to quality has remained unwavering. Our great-grandfather, Panthakallam Avaran Koya Haji, was a pioneer—a leading tobacco trader, kerosene dealer, and agent for various FMCG products of a British company, distributing goods across the Malabar region.
In 1942, during the Quit India movement, our family made a courageous stand. As the nation boycotted British goods, our grandfather took a bold step, severing ties with the British company to launch his own soap brand—Subaida Bar Soap. With his own production units, he successfully marketed his products throughout Malabar, where they quickly gained popularity. The success of Subaida Bar Soap was so profound that it led to a significant decline in the British company’s sales, prompting the first British income tax raid at our ancestral home, Chemmengad Palliveed. This marked our family’s initial venture into creating a regional brand, with Subaida Bar Soap and other products, such as umbrellas, becoming widely recognized across Malabar.
Continuing this legacy of entrepreneurship, our grandfather, Salt Abdulla Koya, became the largest salt merchant in Kerala. Following in his footsteps, our father, Muhammed Basheer, established Varish Traders in 1981, specializing in pulses and spices, with three stores in Calicut’s Big Bazaar. Although he tragically passed away at the young age of 36, his entrepreneurial spirit lived on, eventually evolving into what is now IMAX GOLD and KYMA GOLD—brands that have become synonymous with excellence in rice. Since its inception, IMAX GOLD has grown into one of the world’s largest rice brands, driven by a legacy of quality and innovation that spans over 100 years. This spirit of innovation runs deep in our family.
For the perfect Kozhikoden biriyani, exceptional rice is essential. The finest Jeerakasala rice, known for its fragrant aroma and fluffy texture, comes only from West Bengal’s Burdwan district, where our IMAX agro products are based. We go the extra mile by aging the rice in paddy for two years, a traditional method that enhances its flavor and texture.
